Altona Test Suite – Application Kit (2005 update)
Five additional standard printing conditions available
The Altona Test Suite – Application Kit has been updated now by
five additional standard printing conditions for newspaper (1) and gravure
printing (4) in accordance with the international standards ISO 12647-3 and
ISO 12647-4. All Altona Test Suite files are thus applicable to all up-to-date
available standard printing conditions for offset, continuous, gracure, and
newspaper printing in accordance with with ISO 12647 standards.
Furthermore, evaluation of the previous printing conditions, as well as a
technical revision of the existing Altona files are a component of the 2005
update. All subscribers of the Altona Test Suite – Application Kit
receive it automatically free of charge. The 2005 update is from now on a
regular component of the Altona Test Suite – Application Kit which
has proved very successful all over the world.
The 2005 update includes the Altona Test Suite files „Measure“ and
„Visual“ for five additional standard printing conditions
available for application on CD-ROM. The CD-ROM includes the characterisation
data and profiles of these standard printing conditions.

The files are specially designed for testing digital output
devices – primarily proofing systems as well as conventional and
digital printing systems. Reference prints for these five additional standard
printing conditions are not supplied. Documentation revisions are included in
the latest version of the PDF file as well as in this update. A revised
version of all 14 existing Altona Test Suite files „Measure“ and
„Visual“ for offset and continuous printing are also provided on
the update CD-ROM.
A total of four standard printing conditions have been available
for European publication gravure printing (bvdm, ECI, ERA, ugra/Fogra)
since 2004 resp. June 2005. Three of these are also standardised in accordance
with international process standard gravure publication ISO/DIS 12647-4
(2004). The new uniform profile complying with newspaper printing process
standard ISO/DIS 12647-3 (2004) has been available since July 2004 (Ifra).
Altona Test Suite files are now available for use with all currently standard
printing conditions for offset, continuous, gravure, and newspaper printing in
accordance with ISO 12647 standards.

Altona Test Suite bvdm/ECI/ugra/FOGRA (Online Version and Applikation Kit) is a joint
project of Bundesverband Druck und Medien (bvdm) Wiesbaden, European Color Initiative
(ECI), EMPA/Ugra St Gallen and Forschungsgesellschaft Druck (FOGRA) Munich. This
application kit consists of various reference prints and color specimens (process color
solids) carefully produced within very small tolerances. Test suite files, characterisation
data, ICC-Profiles (according to standard printing conditions ISO 12647) on CD-ROM are part
of the applikation kit. A comprehensive documentation explains the elements of Atona Test
Suite in detail, how to use it and provides all standard process control related
information.
The Altona Test Suite consists of a set of PDF files, specially designed
for testing digital output devices – in particular, proofing solutions, conventional
and digital printing systems.

However its use is not limited to output devices. The purpose of the Altona Test Suite is
to check PDF/X-3 compliance and color accuracy for all software and hardware modules used
in a composite PDF workflow for print production.
Altona Test Suite was developped in
2002 and 2003 and extensively used and evaluated at the Digital Proofing Shootouts
organised by bvdm and ECI. Both vendors, system developers and printers, media service
providers are using Altona Test Suite as a systematic, comprehensive test set and system
benchmark for digital proofing/workflow systems, digital and analog output devices.
In
May 2003 Altona Test Suite was the core test set at IPA’s “digital proofing
shootout” in Chicago, in September 2003 at “Seybold SF 2003 PDF Workflow
Shootout”. Altona Test Suite is the standard set for data- and process control.
